Juniors excel at LGM club champs

On a weekend when the women’s course-record holder Chloe Gaudion made her remarkable season all the more memorable by becoming the ladies’ club champion, the top two in the men’s event went head-to-head right down to the wire.

Defending champion Chedhomme led overnight by a shot from Nicolle having shot 66 and 67 respectively on Saturday.

Having reached the turn sharing the lead, Nicolle pulled ahead and led by four with four to go, but a couple of dropped shots on 16 and 17 made it a tense finish going up the last.

His heart-rate would have gone up several beats as he leaked his second out to the right, but he recovered to save his par while Ollie made a birdie four to end up a solitary stroke behind after 36 holes.

‘I haven’t played in anything like that before where we go out in order – it would be nice to see that more – but, yeah, it was interesting having Ollie breathing down my neck,’ said the new club champion Nicolle, who added that his 2019 Island Championship victory at the same course held him in good stead on the back nine.

Obviously, we all know Ollie is class, he is off plus three, I take my hat off to him he played so well today but got a bit unlucky on the greens.

‘I think he’ll be one to watch in the island match in a couple of weeks’ time and hopefully this will give me a bit of a boost going over there, too.’

Chloe was a convincing winner of the women’s club championship thanks to following up her opening 79 with an 80 to finish on 159 gross aggregate. Her first round included birdies at the second, fourth and 10th and although her second round got off to a slower start, she recovered impressively with eight pars and a birdie at the eighth in her final 14 holes.

A PROUD DAY FOR JUNIOR GOLF

Many congratulations to Ollie Chedhomme who has been rewarded for his outstanding play this season by being selected for the Guernsey men’s team for the inter insular in Jersey in September. The sixteen year old has the lowest handicap (+3) in the Guernsey team and his recent performances have included a new men’s course record at La Grande Mare and a stunning 65 gross at L’ancresse.

Rory Mckenna narrowly missed out on selection this time and has been named as Reserve. Island Captain Dave Jeffery said he expects Rory and brother Conor to be pushing hard for selection next year. Rory has had a season to be proud of. He became Island Junior Boys Champion for the first time and a number of stand out performances included a superb 68 gross as he closes in on scratch for the first time.

Both boys are fantastic ambassadors for Junior Golf on the Island and we’re very proud of them.

Juniors win 3.5 to 1.5 against a strong Ladies Development Squad team.

Representatives of the junior island team took on a strong Ladies development squad team on Sunday at Royal Guernsey. The managers for the event, Roland Mills and James Chamberlain, took the opportunity to blood some of the younger members of the squad mixing it with a blend of experience. It was great challenge playing in the less played foresome format.

The match was led of by Max Raffray, playing singles against Veronica Bougourd. Max playing singles due to a late withdrawal, was always in control of his match after going out in 37. He closed out the match winning 3&2.

Comeback of the day was by Jamie Trebert and Noah Davy. The pair were 3 down and 3 to play but their never say die spirit earned them a half on the 18th. Chloe Domaille and Chloe Gaudion hit the form team of Mandy Webber and Mary Bate losing 6&4. Alex Mills and James Troop cruised to a 5&3 win after being 4up after the first 4 holes and Lilly and Jenny stole the honour of the win by going 1up on the 17th and holding their nerve on 18 to win.

Team manager of the event Roland Mills said,

‘Well done team… a massive effort to win 3.5 to 1.5. I am so proud of how deep you all fought to defend your matches. A fabulous day for the junior island development team!’

A big thanks to the Ladies Development squad, Royal Guernsey for hosting, the organisers and Appleby and the Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation for their continued support of the junior island squad.

CHEDS & JAYDEN ON FIRE

Ollie Chedhomme is living the dream. The new La Grande Mare course record holder and the Island’s best player, is in the form of his life. After an incredible few weeks, he took his golf to yet another level with a magnificent 65 gross to win the scratch prize in the Rossborough Insurance St Julians Cup today. Ollie was out in 31 with birdies at the 1st, 6th, 7th and 9th. He followed that with a birdie at the 10th and his only blemish was a bogey on the next hole. He then birdied the 14th and came back in 34. There is so much golf ahead this season so who knows what this outstanding golfer will do next. He’s at a level now where he needs to be competing at Major Boys Championships in the UK and that will be very much part of the next stage of his development next year. In the meantime we should all celebrate his success and look forward to even more headlines.

Jayden Tucknott also had a fantastic day. His recent trip competing in the UK has clearly sharpened his skills and his superb 74 gross for 42 points featured 3 birdies and he was out in 36 and back in 38. He was just edged out of first place on countback but the consolation will be another handicap reduction and a round to be proud of.

Lewis Marley also had a terrific day, his 74 gross was his best score to date, for 39 points. He was out in 38 and came back in 36 with birdies on the 10th and 16th.

ROYAL GUERNSEY JUNIOR OPEN - LEWIS MARLEY IS THE CHAMPION

Lewis Marley has a habit of rising to the occasion and today he beat off very strong competition to land our flagship event - The Junior Open. Lewis scored 38 points and set up victory with 11 pars and two birdies, one at the 4th which seems to be his favourite hole at the moment, and crucially at the 18th. It was an excellent performance particularly on the back nine where he was back in 36 shots. Big hitting Lewis is a real talent, a serial winner and there is so much more to come from him, with lots of golf ahead this season - many congratulations on a fantastic win.

Runner up was Jamie Trebert who was just edged out on countback. It’s been great to see him come back into form and he will be delighted with another round sub 80 which included birdies at the 10th and 14th. A more relaxed approach to his golf is clearly paying dividends but he remains one of our most talented Juniors. In third place was Jayden Tucknott and Rory Mckenna scooped the scratch Prize.

The red tee Competition was hotly contested and the winner was Oliver Farmer with 39 points making seven pars along the way. Runner up was Alex Mills with another super round and Joel Hoolahan was also under par with 37 points - a fantastic effort.

A huge thank you to our incredibly generous sponsor Rihoy & Son! There were ten prizes on offer today and Managing Director Gavin Rihoy presented the prizes along with the Captain.

NOAH DAVY WINS THE GOLF19 JUNIOR OPEN

Congratulations to Noah Davy who won the Golf19 Junior Open sponsored by Grant Thornton. The challenging course is always a test for our Junior Golfers demanding precision off the tee and an excellent short game which is a real feature of Noah’s skill set.

Noah put together a superb round scoring 36 points and won it with a stunning back nine. He was just one over par coming home making two birdies along the way, a tremendous effort in the heat of competition and on such a difficult track. Runner Up was Jayden Tucknott and Conor Mckenna was third.

Congratulations Noah, this was his third win in Junior Competition in what has been a terrific season for him and he remains firmly in contention for the Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation Order of Merit with plenty of golf ahead.

STUNNING NEW COURSE RECORD AT LA GRANDE MARE FOR OLLIE CHEDHOMME

Not content with becoming Guernsey’s lowest handicap golfer, Ollie Chedhomme shot a spectacular two under 63 gross to break the course record at La Grande Mare yesterday.

‘Cheds’ has been in stellar form recently most noticeably at L’ancresse but he brought his ‘A’ game to his home track and shot the lights out in the CIB Medal Competition. He was out in 33 with a birdie at the 9th and came back in 30 with birdies at the 10th, 13th and 14th. He is now down to 1.9

Huge congratulations Ollie on yet another extraordinary performance and what an unbelievable weekend for Junior golf in Guernsey with two new course records - whatever next?
