SPORTS COMMISSION : GOLF AIMS TO GET ON A PAR WITH OTHER SPORTS

image0sc.jpeg

Golf is the latest sport to be offered in Guernsey primary schools thanks to a partnership between a local charity, the Guernsey Sports Commission, the Guernsey Golf Union and Island golf clubs.

Funded by the Ray Lowe Foundation, pupils have the chance to experience a six-week programme introducing them to the rudiments of the sport and culminating in the chance to visit their closest golf club.

Geoff Troop, Junior Golf Development Coordinator, has been instrumental in driving the project forwards.

‘After the six weeks the pupils get the option to go and have a session at the golf club where their coach is from,’ said Geoff.

‘The club gets the opportunity to tell them all about what they offer and what junior membership options are available to them. We will also provide them with information about junior academies, summer camps etc.’

Hautes Capelles is one of the first primary schools to pilot the programme. Royal Guernsey Golf professional Natalie Goodall worked with the three Year 6 classes during the first half of the Autumn term.

‘This is the thing that I like doing most,’ said Natalie about her experience working with the children.

‘When I was growing up golf gave me ideas about organising myself and I think it gives them the chance to try something new.

‘Golf is seen as an exclusive sport, but times are changing,’ said Natalie.

Inclusion is a key part of the programme.

‘Golf appeals to different children,’ explained Geoff.

‘It’s about breaking down the barriers and making them feel welcome. We have been surprised at how well it went. The children really enjoyed it.’

The school sessions include lots of exercises designed to introduce the skills of golf but that can be delivered on a school site. Even when the weather’s bad the children get the chance to practice their putting skills by taking part in a fun crazy golf session

The programme reflects the aims of the PE Curriculum and the Fundamental Movement Skills that underpin all sports.

But one of the main drivers is to ensure the children enjoy themselves.

‘I like how they give us stuff to do and we are able to do it with our friends,’ said 10-year-old Joe.

‘We’re learning putting, driving and posture. It’s not like competitive sport but it’s fun.’

‘I like learning all different things about the posture and I find it quite difficult to hit the ball slowly,’ said Carey, also 10.

‘I’m gradually getting better and want to play on the driving range and be better than my uncle,’ she said.

Classmate Ava agreed: ‘I’ve learned quite a lot, but it was hard at the beginning. I would like to carry on.’

Geoff is delighted with how things are going and hopes that the schools’ programme will eventually lead to more junior players joining and playing at the local golf clubs.

‘It’s the culmination of a three-year programme and it’s great to see golf being on a par with more mainstream sports and being introduced to a wider cadre of people,’ said Geoff.

‘This is a great way of increasing participation in golf and really shows what can be achieved when a number of people work together – charities, the Sports Commission and golf clubs.’

Golf is also one of the twenty sports taking part in the 2021 Specsavers Youth Games.

RAY LOWE ORDER OF MERIT WINNERS ARE CROWNED

The Junior competition season came to a close today with the End of season Competition at La Grande Mare.

The White Tee Under 28 Category was fiercely contested throughout the season. Lewis Marley has enjoyed a superb run of form recently and his five wins meant he eventually ran out a comfortable winner by 8 points from Rory Mckenna who pipped Daniel Troop on countback. Lewis has played some stunning golf at times this season but there is still clearly a lot more to come from this mercurial player. 2021 promises to be an exciting time for him and a number of our blossoming talents.

Surprisingly Rory Mckenna only won one order of Merit event but it highlights his wonderful consistency that he was runner up and he was comfortably the best scratch player of the season. Daniel has continued to improve and has played some great golf this year.

In the Over 28 Handicap Category Thomas Chamberlain was the runaway winner with five wins over the season amassing 77 points along the way. Thomas is one of our brightest talents across all the age groups and has enjoyed some titanic battles with his rivals over the season. Runner up in this category was Lily McNeela who pipped Alex Mills on countback. Lily had three wins during and despite a loss of form after a great start came roaring back at the end of the season which is a credit to her strength of character. Alex Mills clocked up two wins and next season can’t come quick enough for this talented ball striker.

The Blue Tee Category was contested for the first time this season in the Order of Merit. The scoring at times at all the venues was nothing short of sensational. The winner was Theo Hollyer-Hill with a remarkable 6 wins for 79 points. Theo loves the game and a combination of hard work, talent and a great attitude made him a deserved winner. Runner Up was Lewis O’Brien, a wonderful talent and such was his consistency he was only five points behind Theo in a season which included two excellent wins.

Despite the challenges we’ve all faced over the last year, it was incredible that a full schedule of 17 Junior Competions was eventually able to be played. A big thank you to Junior Co-Ordinator Geoff Troop and the administrators at all the clubs for their hard work in making this happen.

29 Juniors competed over the season which is testament to the flourishing strength of the Junior game. A special thank you to the Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation for their continued support of Junior Golf. We look forward to an even bigger and better Order of Merit Series next season.

Perfect conditions greeted the Competitors in the Candy Cup at La Grande Mare yesterday. Lewis heads the Leaderboard in the 28 & under handicap category in the Ray Lowe Order of Merit with the last competition in November.

In the Red Tee Category it was another shoot out between Thomas Chamberlain and Alex Mills. Thomas eventually ran out the winner with 39 points for his 5th win of the season and his lead now looks to be virtually unassailable in the Ray Lowe Order of Merit. Alex scored 36 points and third was Joel Hoolahan with another excellent performance.
In the blue tee category it was another win for Anton Swale with a level par 18 points with Theo Hollyer-Hill in second and Lewis O’Brien in third. Theo heads the Order of Merit by two from Lewis in what looks to be an exciting showdown next month with two of our youngest talents.

RORY AND JENNIE ARE JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONS

RORY AND JENNIE ARE JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONS

Conditions were excellent for the Junior Club Championships today.

In the boys competition, eight players took part. Daniel Troop shot the best score of the day with a superb 79 gross lead to lead by one after the first round from favourite Rory Mckenna. Junior Captain Ollie Parsons has got an excellent record in this event and his 81 was the only other nett score under par along with Daniel. After the ever popular carvery pit stop in the Clubhouse, the pressure was ramped up in the afternoon as the players went out in reverse order for the second round. Daniel and Rory enjoyed an excellent battle with Rory eventually coming out on top holing a clutch putt on 17 and matching his morning score which was good enough to take the title by seven shots from younger brother Conor who had a very solid afternoon. Ollie Parsons was third on countback. Huge Congratulations Rory from everyone in the Junior Section on yet another Boys Club Championship!

In the girls Championships four girls took part and it was great to see Lily McNeela competing again. The format was 18 holes stableford and in a close run affair Jennie Ballay emerged as Champion with an excellent 34 points just edging out Chloe Gaudion on countback. All the girls have enjoyed a brilliant season with big handicap reductions across the board and plenty of wins between them. Many Congratulations Jennie, Royal Guernsey Junior Girls Club Champion 2020.

Junior Star Rory Mckenna came within a whisker of joining some of Guernsey’s greatest golfers on the honours board in the final round of the men’s club championships today. Just like last week there were high winds but the Hampshire U16 Captain showed yet again he has the technique and talent to deal with the toughest of conditions. His second round of 78 gross nett 73 featured an excellent front 9 of 38 and he birdied the 14th to come back in 40 for a 36 hole total of 155 just one behind veteran Mick Marley. It was an outstanding effort to come so close at this stage in Rory’s career although he did win the nett prize which was a nice reward for two superb rounds of golf where he left some of the island’s finest trailing in his wake.

Many congratulations Rory from everyone in the Junior section, a classy and popular player who many of our juniors look up to, we are all very proud of you.

Rory will be in action next weekend in the Boys Junior Championships.
