A message from Royal Guernsey Junior Organising team

GUidelines for Junior Players and Parents/Guardians

Before the playing of the next junior competition this coming Sunday the Junior Team would like to advise all junior competitors and their parents / guardians of the following guidelines:

1) During play, scores should be recorded and agreed with your playing partner at the completion of each hole before moving to the next tee box.
2) At the completion of the round cards should be checked and signed by both the player and marker.
If there are any disagreements on scores then the competitors should speak to a member of the Junior Team who will be on hand to help resolve any issues.
3) The RGGC Junior Section caddie policy should be followed at all times.
4) Parents / guardians who are restricted from caddying may follow a game but should not be within 25 metres of the play.
5) Parents / guardians should not converse with players at any time whilst play is in progress.
6) Parents / guardians are welcome to help look for golf balls to help the pace of play but should not involve themselves in any rules issues unless asked to do so by a member of the Junior Team.
7) All red tee matches will be chaperoned by a scorer who will record the scores of all the players in that match. These will be arranged before each competition.
8) All junior competitors should carry a rule book. These are available in the clubhouse foyer or from the main office.

The Junior Team want all juniors to enjoy their golf in a fun and safe environment, please follow the guidelines above and this will help to ensure this happens.

Wins for Jayden and Lily on a challenging day on the links

It was a character building afternoon at L’ancresse yesterday with fierce winds from start to finish in the competition making it very tough for everyone.

It’s fair to say Jayden Tucknott has been bitten by the golf bug. During exercise time in Lockdown he managed to find 600 golf balls out on the Common but it is his hard work on and off the course that has really paid dividends. Jayden played most of his golf at St Pierre Park before joining the Royal and took a bit of time to adapt to the longer game off the white tees. However, hours and and hours on the course playing at every available opportunity has changed his game. A booming drive off the first into a fierce headwind set the tone for the rest of the round and he never looked back finishing with a superb 36 points which would have been well under par on any other day. With his maiden win at L’ancresse under his belt and now playing off 19, this talented young player is one to watch this season and in the years ahead. Runner up James Troop will be especially pleased with how he came back with a tremendous back nine for an excellent 34 points which will give him confidence for the weeks ahead.

Lily Mcneela is another player who loves the game. Amazingly Lily had two holes in one last year which highlighted her as an emerging talent. She missed the season opener at La Grande Mare last week so it was good to see her back. Lily’s excellent temperament was perfect for the challenging conditions yesterday and her well crafted 33 points gave her a deserved victory from Joel Hoolahan whose 30 points shows how well he has adapted to the move up to the red tees.
In the blue tee competition the scoring was incredible. Theo Hollyer-Hill stormed to victory with a sensational 31 points for his nine holes which didn’t go unnoticed by Mr Boyd back at the club and as a result he has had his handicap reduced by 8 shots! Debutant Lochlan Bain should be very proud of his 21 points as should Lewis O’Brien with 19.
Next up is the Cressida Priaulx and Nightingale Cups on Sunday, entry forms are up in the Junior Locker Room (entries close on Wednesday)

A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER FOR JENNIE BALLAY

IMG_3738.jpg

Last weekend saw the first junior Competition of the year and it was one to remember for Jennie Ballay. Her hard work in the off season has clearly paid dividends as she posted a remarkable 82 gross (net 57) and 48 stableford points to take an early lead in the Ray Lowe Order of Merit Series with the win. The Summer Solstice Competition at La Grande Mare was the second day of the Junior Club Championships and Jennie showed her quality by shooting an equally impressive 83 (nett 58) on the day before. A substantial handicap reduction beckons and Jennie has put down an early marker as a serious contender for the Order of Merit.

Home player Ollie Chedhomme took the honours in the Club Championships shooting back to back 68s in testing conditions, testament to his quality.

Conor Mckenna took second place in the Summer Solstice Competition with a superb 39 points which is just the start of season he was looking for.

In the red tee competition (Handicaps 28 and over) Thomas Chamberlain took the honours with an extraordinary 49 points from Alexander Mills whose 43 points would surely have been good enough to win on any other day. There is some serious talent in the youngest Junior ranks and we look forward to seeing how they progress over the season.

Next up on Sunday is The Hurford Cup and Bowmaker Trophy at Royal Guernsey which is open to White, Red and Blue tee players.

Competitive Junior Golf returns with the LGM Junior Club Championships

The weekend saw the welcome return of competition golf for the island’s junior players with the holding of the La Grande Mare Junior Club championship supported by Petersfield Landscaping. The competition was played over two rounds and the players had to contend with windy conditions.

The friendly rivalry between Ollie Chedhomme and Rory Mckenna continued on the first day. The two Hampshire players carded the two best gross scores of day 1, with Ollie’s 68 giving him a two shot lead. The boys were paired together in round 2 and it was Ollie who mastered the conditions, scoring 68 once again, and taking the shield for the second year running.

In the handicap competition it became a battle of the girls. On day 1, Jenny Ballay took a 6 shot lead from her nearest competitor Chloe Gaudion with a stellar net 58. This was followed up on Sunday with an even better net 57 showing Jenny is quickly developing into one of the island’s best junior talents.

Alex Mills and Thomas Chamberlain had a keen competition from the Red tees. Both will see substantial handicap cuts with stableford scores for the two days being 95 and 87 respectively.

After a long enforced layoff it was great to see many in the field to perform well in difficult conditions. There are good signs that Guernsey Juniors will have a strong future.
