The weekend saw the welcome return of competition golf for the island’s junior players with the holding of the La Grande Mare Junior Club championship supported by Petersfield Landscaping. The competition was played over two rounds and the players had to contend with windy conditions.
The friendly rivalry between Ollie Chedhomme and Rory Mckenna continued on the first day. The two Hampshire players carded the two best gross scores of day 1, with Ollie’s 68 giving him a two shot lead. The boys were paired together in round 2 and it was Ollie who mastered the conditions, scoring 68 once again, and taking the shield for the second year running.
In the handicap competition it became a battle of the girls. On day 1, Jenny Ballay took a 6 shot lead from her nearest competitor Chloe Gaudion with a stellar net 58. This was followed up on Sunday with an even better net 57 showing Jenny is quickly developing into one of the island’s best junior talents.
Alex Mills and Thomas Chamberlain had a keen competition from the Red tees. Both will see substantial handicap cuts with stableford scores for the two days being 95 and 87 respectively.
After a long enforced layoff it was great to see many in the field to perform well in difficult conditions. There are good signs that Guernsey Juniors will have a strong future.
