Hampshire Boys training took place on Guernsey for the first time on Tuesday at Royal Guernsey Golf Club.
With ten Guernsey Boys involved with Hampshire teams and development squads, the cost of travelling to monthly training days in the UK can be absolutely prohibitive, so a team from the Hampshire Golf Union came up with the idea of trialing training days on the Island which replicate ones in the UK. The only difference in Guernsey, is that all age groups were brought together to train from U12s all the way up to U18s. The training sessions comprise of skills tests in the morning including putting, chipping and pitching, with stats recorded providing a fun but competitive environment. After lunch the boys all played 18 holes in a competitive medal.
We’re very fortunate to have highly experienced PGA Coaches of the calibre of Phil Sykes and John Dent from La Grande Mare on the Island and they both worked together for the first time to deliver the session.
It was a fantastic, productive day enjoyed by everyone. It was great to see all the age groups together with our youngest player ten year old Lewis O’Brien working with our oldest players adding to the fun but also helping to develop his game further and visa versa. A special mention to Alex Mills who shot a superb 77 gross in the medal in the afternoon to highlight his class.
Well done to everyone involved, and a huge thank you to John and Phil for their hard work and delivering a session of the very highest quality.
The next training day is in August at La Grande Mare and hopefully we’ll see more on Island sessions in the future.
