Sports Commission Family Fun Day 2020

Big thanks to all involved in introducing golf to a new generation at the Sports Commission Family Fun Day. Golf Professionals Alex Murrell and Natalie Goodall showed over 100 new golfers how to make a swing and hole a putt, even a Guernsey Donkey had a go.

Teams of volunteers from La Grande Mare and Royal Guernsey ensured the event ran smoothly and everyone had a great time.

GUERNSEY WOMEN’S GOLF DEVELOPMENT SQUAD v GUERNSEY JUNIOR GOLF SQUAD

Last night saw a welcome break in format from individual competition to fourball Matchplay against the Ladies. It was an interesting start for the Juniors with one dropped off at the wrong course and another forgetting their putter - that’s why we love Junior golf! 😃

Play got underway in perfect conditions. It was great to see some mixed pairings with the Juniors and the challenge of team golf enjoyed by everyone.

In the end the Juniors ran out the winners but huge thanks to all the Ladies, these matches play an important role in the development of our Juniors and although they are competitive, they are also great fun. We look forward to the return match next year.

GOODRIDGE AND LONGUE RUE CUPS - Lewis and Thomas lead the way.

There was plenty at stake in the white tee Goodridge Cup yesterday with prestigious silverware and Island Championship qualifying on the line. Lewis Marley was the star of the show winning the Goodridge Cup with 39 points. He started with a birdie on the first and after a brief visit to the car park on the third, settled down again to reel off a total of 11 pars, a superb effort. An ugly 10 on the 15th could have knocked him off his stride but his ability to bounce back is one of the features of his game and he came back strongly with a 4, 3 finish. The icing on the cake as he was to find out later was that he had qualified through to the Matchplay section of the Junior Island Championships where he will play Ollie Chedhomme. Big hitting Lewis will go in to the semi final with nothing to lose. On his day he is capable of shooting the lights out and it should be an excellent contest. Runner up was Rory McKenna with matching nines of 37 for 74 gross and 37 points inching closer to playing off 4. He is in good form and will be looking forward to playing in the Championships where he will meet Daniel Troop. Daniel qualified by virtue of an excellent back nine edging out Conor Mckenna on countback. His back nine featured birdies on the 12th where he hit a stunning tee shot to 8 feet and the 15th.

In the Red Tee Longue Rue Cup Thomas Chamberlain scored an amazing 43 points edging out debutant Oliver Farmer on countback. The quality of ball striking and play at times in this group which also included Alex Mills was absolutely outstanding. Thomas scored 25 points on the back nine including a blob, brilliant stuff. Lily Mcneela’s superb season continues with an excellent third place and yet another handicap reduction.
The Longue Rue was also the qualifier for the Girls Island Championship and Chloe Gaudion and Chloe Domaille both made it through in what promises to be a keenly fought contest.
In the blue tee competition there were four competitors which was great to see. Lochlan Bain took the honours with a brilliant 24 points from Lewis O’Brien (23 points). Yet again the scoring and play was of the highest quality.
Huge thanks to all the volunteer markers and ball spotters for all their hard work. Fortunately they were rewarded by seeing some wonderful golf. Next up we are back at La Grande Mare next Sunday, entry is open now.

NSV TROPHY & GORDON ROWLINSON CUP - Wins for Rory and Thomas

The summer of great golf for our juniors continues.

In the White Tee NSV Trophy Rory Mckenna enjoyed a fantastic day on the course. His wonderful round of 70 gross featured birdies on the second and fourteenth holes for 41 points. To produce golf of this outstanding quality in challenging conditions highlights just where Rory’s game is at the moment. Going sub 70 is very much within his sights and the busy schedule in the next few weeks will only benefit him. Runner up Noah Davy also enjoyed a great day and earned a two shot handicap reduction for his terrific 40 points. His round featured four pars including a brilliant 3 at the 12th. Jayden Tucknott was third after another very solid display with 37 points.

In the Red tee Gordon Rowlinson Cup the talented Thomas Chamberlain topped the field with 37 points from Chloe Domaille with 36 and Lily McNeela with 34. Both girls should be pleased with their rounds after big handicap reductions recently.

In the blue tee competition Theo Hollyer-Hill was the sole competitor. He has played some incredible golf this season and it was business as usual yesterday. His brilliant 21 points featured a magnificent birdie 2 at the third and his handicap is now down to 29.

Next up are the Goodridge and Longue Rue Cups at L’ancresse on Sunday. Entries close on Wednesday.
