Junior Hampshire Championships 2021

Very wet conditions greeted the five strong Guernsey contingent at Cams Hall for the Hampshire Junior Championships yesterday. All five hit terrific opening tee shots which was all the more impressive considering, Jayden Tucknott , Alex Mills and Thomas Chamberlain were on debut.

The U12/U13 category was played over 18 holes. Alex Mills underlined his class again with fourth place in the scratch, a round which included five pars, a very accomplished debut. Thomas Chamberlain also enjoyed an excellent first Championships. He seemed to take a particular liking to the par 3’s making pars on three out of four of them and finished his round in style with a birdie at the last to finish in 8th. The future is very bright with these two who would surely have impressed our Hampshire hosts seeing them play for the first time.

The U16/U18 Category was played over 36 holes. The boys battled through most of the first round in heavy rain and all of them did themselves proud. James Troop was the highest Guernsey finisher in 19th place in the scratch and was top ten in the nett category, he is now down to single figures for the first time. He was one shot ahead of Jayden Tucknott in 20th (11th nett) and Daniel Troop in 23rd (13th nett). The field featured four plus handicap and two scratch players highlighting the strength of Junior Golf in Hampshire. Jayden Tucknott had the round of the day in the Guernsey contingent. After a difficult morning, he bounced back with a superb 80 gross in the afternoon, one under handicap. His round featured 8 pars and two birdies, a great effort.

Well done to all the boys, the experience playing at this level is invaluable and will stand them in great stead for future Championships. Also a big thank you to sponsors Ray Lowe Sporting FoundationApplebyGuernsey Sports Commission and the Guernsey Golf Union

We look forward to returning next year and bringing an even bigger contingent with some more new faces too.
